What To Do After Someone Breaks Into Your HomeNo matter how sophisticated your home security is, it is not impossible for a break-in to occur. While it is great to have these security systems in place, there are still some rare instances where the intruders were able to bypass the system.
While there are many resources available regarding keeping intruders from coming into your home, there aren't many that talk about what you should do when you come home and realize that your home was broken into.
We hope this short article helps you. Forewarned is forearmed, and knowing what to do in cases like these can help save lives.
Always be aware of your surroundings. Small details can alert you if your home has been broken into. A broken window? A door was left open? These are very small yet very important details that you should watch out for.
Do not panic. Cliche, we know, but the more you panic, the more likely it is for you to miss important details, which can lead you to act irrationally and cause more harm than help in the long run.
Call the police immediately. Have 911 or your local police phone number programmed on your cellphone. Explain that you think someone broke into your home, and what led you to that conclusion. If you do not have your cellphone with you, quickly run to your neighbors house to ask if you can borrow their phone, or if they can place the phone call for you.
Stay calm. Do not act in anger. Trying to find the burglar on your own or confronting the burglar could put you in more danger. These burglars are often desperate, and may try and inject bodily harm with anything that they can get their hands on.
Take note of every evidence you see. Note what alarmed you to the fact that someone broke into your home, what the intruder looked like (if you saw the intruder), items or furniture that the intruder might have touched.
Do not enter your home until the police arrives. If, by chance, you've already entered your home before realizing that someone broke into it, run outside immediately.
Avoid touching anything until the police has processed the crime scene and gathered evidence from your home. Ask for a case number, so you can follow up easily. Keep a list of items that went missing as well. This will help you file a claim with your insurance company.
Keep calm, and think as rationally as you can. This can make a huge difference in the outcome.
